What is likely to happen next for the S&P 500?
When looking at the S&P 500 daily chart, the most important thing I see is a trading range that started on August 18. Compared with the strong trend that came before it, this range has now lasted long enough to be ready for the next phase.
Trading ranges eventually evolve into trending phases. The key question is which direction the next trend will take.
S&P 500 Daily Chart Remains Bullish
The current structure remains bullish because the S&P 500 continues to make higher highs and higher lows.
That keeps the odds tilted toward another all-time high.
I think the S&P 500 is likely to make a new all-time high this month. If that does not happen, November is the next possibility.
However, traders should not assume that the first breakout attempt will automatically succeed.
The S&P 500 just printed a strong daily bullish candle, but that breakout can easily fail. Price could move back into the trading range before trying again.
That is normal behavior inside a range because many breakout attempts fail before the eventual move gets underway.
Why I Expect an Upside Breakout
Although individual breakout attempts can fail, I expect the trading range to eventually break and develop into a trend.
The reason is simple: trading ranges do not last forever.
The current S&P 500 structure continues to show higher highs and higher lows, which keeps the bullish scenario in control.
My expectation is that the S&P 500 will reach 8,000 this month or next month. I strongly favor that scenario, although the exact timing remains uncertain.
The Higher Time Frame Is Starting to Look Stretched
When we move to a higher time frame, the picture becomes more interesting.
The current bull leg is getting old, stretched and increasingly climactic. Price is also approaching the upper part of the channel.
That changes the longer-term risk.
I expect the market to eventually make another all-time high and then start showing signs of a reversal. At that point, the odds of a meaningful correction should increase.
The exact timing and depth of that correction are impossible to know in advance.
It will depend on several factors, including the macro environment and news affecting individual stocks.
The correction could be relatively small, but it could also develop into something much larger.
What Could Happen After the Next All-Time High?
My expectation is that the market first completes the current bullish phase.
That means finishing our long trades, reaching targets where possible and locking in profits.
After that, I want to start looking for opportunities to scale into short positions once the market begins providing actual signs that the trend is changing.
The most important signal for me would be a lower high.
A lower high could mark the transition from the current bullish structure toward a more meaningful correction.
Why Swing Traders Should Be Patient
For swing traders, the easiest money is often made after the market has clearly turned.
When the market starts moving decisively in one direction, price action tends to become faster and less choppy.
That is very different from the current environment, where the market is still spending a lot of time inside a range.
Right now, patience is important.
The goal is to finish the long trades, protect capital, stay mentally fresh and remain financially healthy so we are ready when the next major trend begins.
S&P 500 Outlook
My current view is:
The S&P 500 remains in a bullish trading range that started on August 18.
Higher highs and higher lows keep the odds favoring another all-time high.
I expect that new high to happen this month or, alternatively, in November.
After the next all-time high, the higher-time-frame structure will become increasingly important because the current bull leg is already stretched and approaching the upper part of its channel.
At that point, I will be looking for signs of a reversal and potentially the start of a much more meaningful correction.
For now, the job is simple: stay patient, manage risk, take profits when the targets are reached and be ready for the next phase.
The biggest opportunities often come when the market finally stops chopping and starts trending.
