Did the AI Bubble Just Pop? Why Nvidia Could Enter a Prolonged Trading Range

The AI trade has been one of the most powerful market trends in recent years. Nvidia and other AI-related stocks have delivered extraordinary gains, attracting enormous amounts of capital and pushing expectations to increasingly ambitious levels.

But after every major trend, the market eventually enters a new phase.

The question is whether the AI bubble has already popped or whether we are approaching a prolonged period of consolidation before the next major move.

My view is that it is too early to declare the AI bubble officially over. However, I believe many AI stocks will struggle to make new highs for a considerable period. The technical structure suggests that the market is approaching a transition from a powerful uptrend into a broad trading range.

And Nvidia will play a crucial role in determining how this develops.

Is the AI Bubble Finally Popping?

The AI trade has benefited from enormous investor enthusiasm, substantial infrastructure spending, and expectations of continued earnings growth.

But strong trends do not continue indefinitely without interruptions.

After an extended bull market, the probability of a trading range increases. Instead of continuing to rise steadily, prices begin moving sideways, with repeated rallies and selloffs between established support and resistance levels.

This transition can be frustrating for investors. Stocks that previously delivered consistent gains begin producing failed breakouts, sharp pullbacks, and rallies that eventually reverse.

That is the type of market environment I am preparing for.

I am not claiming that every AI stock has reached its final high. Rather, I believe investors should consider the possibility that the next phase will be dominated by consolidation instead of another uninterrupted rally.

Why Nvidia Is the Key to the AI Trade

Nvidia sits at the center of the AI infrastructure boom. Its graphics processing units are essential to many AI training and inference workloads, making the company one of the most important stocks to watch when evaluating the broader AI sector.

If Nvidia enters a prolonged trading range, it could have significant implications for the entire AI trade.

A stock does not need to collapse for a bearish market environment to develop. Extended sideways movement can be enough to disappoint investors who have become accustomed to persistent upside.

During a trading range, rallies can repeatedly fail near resistance, while selloffs find temporary support at lower levels. Both bulls and bears get opportunities, but neither side maintains control for long.

For traders, recognizing this transition early can be more important than trying to predict the exact date of a market top.

What Happens After a Long-Term Bull Trend?

One of the most important concepts in technical analysis is the tendency of markets to alternate between trending and ranging conditions.

A market can trend higher for an extended period, consolidate, and eventually begin another trend. The same process occurs during bear markets.

A simplified market cycle looks like this:

  1. Strong uptrend: Buyers dominate, and prices establish higher highs and higher lows.
  2. Trading range: Momentum fades, breakouts become less reliable, and prices oscillate between support and resistance.
  3. New directional move: The market eventually breaks out of the range and establishes its next trend.

This pattern appears across multiple time frames, from intraday charts to monthly charts.

The duration of each phase varies considerably. Some trading ranges resolve within weeks, while others persist for months or even years.

This is why I pay close attention to the length and strength of the preceding trend. After a prolonged advance, I want to be prepared for a significant change in market behavior.

Why I Believe Nvidia Could Enter a Trading Range

When I analyze Nvidia, I focus on its higher-time-frame chart structure rather than relying exclusively on short-term price movements.

On a monthly chart, an extended trend becomes easier to identify. It also becomes easier to recognize when the market is potentially approaching a phase in which further gains become more difficult.

My thesis is that Nvidia is entering a period where a broad trading range becomes increasingly plausible.

That does not mean the stock must immediately collapse. There are two possible paths:

I consider both scenarios possible. The exact timing remains uncertain, but I believe the risk/reward for chasing Nvidia higher has deteriorated.

For that reason, I am reluctant to take new long positions at this stage.

How Long Could Nvidia Remain Below Its Previous High?

One of the biggest mistakes investors make is assuming that a stock must quickly recover after a significant correction.

History shows that markets can take years to establish new highs after a major turning point.

The Nasdaq’s recovery following the dot-com bubble is an extreme historical example. The index took many years to recover its previous peak.

Individual stocks can also experience lengthy periods of consolidation, even when the underlying business remains operationally strong.

A prolonged trading range does not necessarily mean that Nvidia’s business is deteriorating. It means that the stock price may need time to absorb previous gains, allow expectations to reset, and establish a new balance between buyers and sellers.

Investors should distinguish between a company’s long-term business prospects and the potential return from buying its shares at a particular valuation.

A great company is not automatically a great investment at every price.

Why I Prefer Short Opportunities at This Stage

My trading approach is based on recurring chart structures, historical market tendencies, and the relationship between risk and potential reward.

At this stage, I believe the risk of chasing bullish breakouts in AI stocks is elevated.

If Nvidia is transitioning into a trading range, failed breakouts and rallies toward resistance could provide opportunities for bearish trades. These setups can offer defined invalidation levels and attractive risk/reward profiles when the price structure confirms the thesis.

However, I do not assume that every rally should be shorted. A market can remain stronger than expected, and a decisive breakout could invalidate the bearish scenario.

The objective is to identify favorable setups rather than become emotionally attached to a prediction.

I also expect that if Nvidia eventually establishes a clear trading range, there will be opportunities to buy near the bottom of that range. This is a different strategy from buying after an extended rally, when the potential upside may be limited relative to the downside risk.

Patience is essential. The best opportunities often emerge when the market reaches an important level and confirms the expected reaction.

What Would Invalidate My Bearish AI Stock Outlook?

No technical thesis should be treated as certain.

If Nvidia continues trending higher, breaks through important resistance, and establishes sustainable new highs, the expectation of an imminent trading range would need to be reassessed.

Likewise, if the broader AI sector continues to demonstrate strong earnings growth and investors remain willing to pay premium valuations, the consolidation phase could begin later than expected.

I am not claiming that the AI bubble has definitively popped. My argument is that the risk of a transition away from the current powerful uptrend is increasing.

The distinction matters because a market can remain bullish even after its risk/reward profile has deteriorated.

My focus is on what the charts are telling us, how price behaves around important levels, and whether the market confirms or invalidates the current thesis.

Final Thoughts: Is the AI Trade Over?

I believe the AI trade is approaching an important transition point.

After an extended bull trend, Nvidia and other AI stocks could enter a prolonged trading range in which rallies repeatedly fail and investors have to adjust to a very different market environment.

The transition does not need to begin with a dramatic crash. It can develop gradually through failed breakouts, repeated pullbacks, and months of sideways price action.

For now, I am cautious about opening new long positions in Nvidia and other AI stocks after their extended advances. I believe traders should focus on risk management, avoid chasing price, and prepare for opportunities on both sides of the market as the structure develops.

The most important question is not whether the AI bubble has already popped. It is when the current trend will transition into a new market phase.

I believe that transition is overdue, and I am positioning myself accordingly.

What do you think? Is the AI trade entering a prolonged consolidation, or will Nvidia lead another major rally?
